Kenneth Gilbert was such a fine performer and teacher. Shaped so many of Montreal's early music specialists, not to mention his influence in Europe. It is intriguing that here he has opted for even lower than usual pitch, not just A 415, but somewhere around A 392 Hz as mentioned by VERITS99. Pitch was quite a wandering minstrel in Bach's time, with chorton, cammerton, cornet-ton and even other being used. Much depended on the pitch of a town's local organ (and how well it had been maintained, or not). For harpsichords, sometimes an instrument's strings and sounding board couldn't withstand the tension needed to crank up to A 415. As for "temperament", don't confuse "well" tempered with "equal" tempered. They're not the same.

Well, if you're going to play this music with that much gusto, then I'll join up. This recording is my #1 go to for the Brandenburgs ever since I bought it. I still love my Klemperer for so many reasons, but this is superb musicianship and interpretive art.

Played way too fast - a rough translation of the title is 'All men are mortal' or 'All men have to die'. Often played at funerals which is a sad occasion.
